Porcine Mycoplasmas

Leader, Dominiek Maes, University of Ghent

Dominiek Maes (DM) is head of the Unit of Porcine Health Management at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Ghent University Belgium. The unit has a very intensive collaboration with the laboratory of bacteriology of the same faculty, chaired by prof. F. Haesebrouck. The research group has performed lots of studies on Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and other respiratory pathogens in pigs. The work on Mycoplasma has focused mainly on the pathogenesis and transmission of the pathogen, differences between Mycoplasma strains in terms of genomic, antigenic and virulence characteristics, interaction of the pathogen with the animal host, antimicrobial treatment and resistance of M. hyopneumoniae field strains, and control measures, with emphasis on vaccination. His team has developed reliable infection models for the pathogen, and has extensive experience with experimental as well as field studies. DM is leader of the porcine team of IRPCM since 2014. DM has published over 260 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, from which over 50 on swine Mycoplasmas. He has supervised 8 completed PhDs on M. hyopneumoniae and performed more than 60 oral presentations on the topic during international conferences.
